Intuitive Eating Classes

These classes are offered in a group or individual setting over multiple sessions.

Founded by registered dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, intuitive eating is a flexible approach to food that emphasizes trusting your body’s internal signals of hunger and fullness rather than relying on external rules or restrictions. "It involves tuning in to your body’s needs, desires, and cravings and making food choices that honor your physical and emotional well-being," explains Jessica Jones, R.D., registered dietitian and Premier Protein Cereal’s nutrition consultant.

In practice, that means you'll need to closely tune into your body's hunger and fullness cues to determine when and how much to eat. "It's about giving yourself unconditional permission to eat what you want to eat when you are hungry and knowing the difference between physical and emotional hunger," says Melissa Prest, D.C.N., R.D.N., a national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a member of the Prevention Medical Review Board.

Nutritional Consultation

According to the ACL Nutrition and Aging Resource Centernutrition counseling “provides personalized guidance to individuals who are at nutritional risk because of their health or nutritional history, dietary intake, chronic illness, or medication use.”

Nutrition counseling is typically provided by a registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietician nutritionist (RDN). Through a supportive, one-on-one counseling process, an RD/RDN can help you understand how diet affects your overall health. They can also help you plan healthy meals that meet your daily nutrition needs and lifestyle. It’s important to understand that nutrition counseling is not a quick fix. The goal is to make gradual, sensible dietary changes you can maintain over the long term.

ServSafe® Training

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) requires that at least one employee at a retail food establishment be a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) or have a Food Handler Certificate. This person, known as the Person in Charge (PIC), is responsible for food safety during all hours of operation. The ServSafe Manager certification is an accredited program that meets the SC DHEC's certification and training standards. To become certified, individuals must pass a 90-question, multiple-choice exam and receive a wallet card.

The ServSafe Manager certification can be beneficial for many roles, including restaurant managers, chefs, dietitians, and school food service managers. It verifies that the certified individual has the knowledge to protect the public from foodborne illnesses, which can reduce the risk of liability and fines. Materials from the National Restaurant Association (NRA) are used in the training. Kathy is a ServSafe instructor and proctor.
